PART 1: TECHNICAL/SAFETY SECTION (Agenda)
The Electrical Contractors Certification exam is offered in two parts: a Technical/Safety section (100 test questions, 5 hours) and a Business section (50 test questions, 2.5 hours). Both parts are open-book exams.
The Technical/Safety section is administered as a paper and pencil exam and the results are reported as a sub-score. The fee for the Technical/Safety section is $127.50 and is payable to the DBPR. If a candidate fails the Technical/Safety portion of the exam three (3) times in a row, they must complete seven (7) continuing education hours applicable to the section(s) failed before reapplying to the DBPR and taking the exam again. To meet this requirement, candidates will be informed as to the area(s) in which they are deficient (Technical, and/or Safety, and/or Business).
The following is a sampling of the number of questions for the individual specialties, on the Technical/Safety portion of the exam for each area of expertise.

NOTE: The candidate information booklet will contain all of the specialties with the expected number of questions for each section on the exam.
The exam may contain a small number of pilot test questions. The purpose of the pilot test questions within the examination is to expand and improve the bank of questions from which future examinations will be drawn. This is a common practice used by many national and state exam programs and is a critical step in ensuring the continued reliability and validity of the exams. Pilot test questions are NOT counted when computing your scores. Additional time will be given for answering the pilot test questions. The time allowed for testing has been evaluated to ensure there is adequate time for completing test questions and pilot questions. It will not be disclosed as to which questions are pilot questions, as some testers may then skip those questions in favor of others thereby possibly skewing the response information generated.
The exams developed and administered by the DPBR are not speed tests. This means the majority of candidates have completed the test at the point where time is called. There will be ample time to complete all testing questions, including any pilot test questions.
